Buick’s new Encore gets a sibling

Buick’s new Encore gets a European sibling in the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka. What do you think of the European vs. American designs?

CarAndDriver writes:

The synthesis of the Opel and Buick lineups is no longer particularly newsworthy, so it’s no surprise that the Buick Encore compact crossover has spawned a European sibling, the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka. The most prominent difference between the domestic and the Continental models is the grille. The headlight design is different, too, with the Opel getting a unique, sickle-shaped element on the outer part of the units. The Buick also can be spec’d in a monochrome look, while every Mokka we’ve seen wears black bumpers, rockers, and lower-door cladding. Another Buick differentiation: The portholes on its hood, which nod to Buick’s past but do nothing to serve air to the 140-hp, 1.4-liter turbo.

Buick Verano is a compact with big-car hush

What if you could have a car that was a compact sedan that carried the sound and luxury of a full-size sedan? That's exactly what Buick has done with the Verano. Designed to deliver optimal MPG, adequate space, a smooth ride, and plenty of horsepower just like a full-sized sedan, packed into a compact.

USAToday writes:

Can a small Buick feel and sound like a big one? And if it did, would you want to buy one?

Drive On came away impressed on all counts earlier this month with the new Buick Verano, a compact sedan that is able to retain the brand's reputation for comfort and whisper quietness in the cabin.

At the same time, Verano manages to avoid the things buyers never liked about Buicks -- a squishy ride more akin to a hovercraft and ill-fitting interiors. Testing the car over hundreds of miles, Verano handled confidently and didn't leave us guessing whether pavement was passing beneath us.

Buick App Simulates Fuel Efficient Driving

Buick is making leaps and bounds at going more green with the new Regal and LeCrosse thanks to an improved hybrid drivetrain.

Autoblog.com writes:

Remember the car-racing video games you played as a kid? Think of this as the opposite.

General Motors is looking to raise consumer awareness of the hybrid drivetrains on its Buick LaCrosse andRegal by offering three Buick-branded smartphone application games that reward players for "driving" in a more fuel-efficient manner.

GM's free Buick eAssist Fuel Efficiency games, which are available for both iPhone and Android phone users, challenge the players to drive their Buicks to a particular location without running out of gas from a heavy foot. The games highlight eAssist features such as its regenerative braking system, which stores energy created through braking that can be used to propel the car. Buick's $30,820 LaCrosse (see Autoblog's test drive review here) has a hybrid system that helps the approximately 3,900-pound car get 25 miles per gallon in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.

Buick's eAssist system mates a 182-horsepower 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder gasoline direct-injection engine with an electric motor that can deliver an additional burst of up to 15 horsepower during acceleration while shutting the engine down when not in motion. The eAssist system is also available on the 2012 Buick Regal.

Check out these 10 things you may or may not know about GMC!

GMC has manufactured trucks since 1902, and is one of the industry's healthiest brands. Innovation and engineering excellence is built into all GMC vehicles and the brand is evolving to offer more fuel-efficient trucks and crossovers, including the Terrain smaller SUV and Acadia crossover.  GMC is the only manufacturer to offer three full-size hybrid vehicles with the Yukon, Yukon Denali SUVs and the Sierra pickup. The new Sierra Heavy Duty pickups are the most capable and powerful trucks in the market.

GMC is one of the longest-running brands in the General Motors portfolio, the second-largest of the four GM brands in U.S. sales, and a standard bearer for engineering in pickup trucks, SUVs, and crossover vehicles. Here are 10 little-known facts about GMC:
  1. The GMC name turns 100 years old in 2012. In 1912, Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was merged with two others – Reliance and Randolph – to become GMC.
  2. On August 1, 1909, a Rapid F-406-B – a GMC predecessor – was the first truck to reach the 14,110-foot summit of Pikes Peak.
  3. If GMC was a standalone manufacturer, it would be the tenth-largest automaker in the United States in terms of total vehicle sales from January to November of 2011.
  4. GMC built some of the world’s earliest electric vehicles from 1912-1917. These trucks had single-digit model names, each denoting load capacity, from one-half-ton to 12 tons.
  5. GMC’s luxury-focused Denali trim level currently outsells the entire product lines of some premium automakers, including Land Rover, Jaguar, and Porsche.
  6. GMC was tasked with engineering and production of the 1936 Parade of Progress vans and the 1941 Futurliners, which toured the country carrying mobile road shows.
  7. Today, GMC and the Denali trim level are among the fastest-growing nameplates in the U.S. with respective sales increases of 22 percent and 91 percent year over year.
  8. During World War II, GMC manufactured approximately 584,000 military vehicles, including the CCKW-353 “Deuce-and-a-Half” and the amphibious “Duck.”
  9. The GMC Sierra – the brand’s top selling model – outsold the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan combined, with 40,000 sales to spare, through the first 11 months of 2011.
  10. From 1973-1978, GMC produced motorhomes in 23- and 26-foot lengths. They appeared in Bill Murray’s 1981 movie, Stripes and the 1996 blockbuster, Twister.
